Truro Health Park
Truro Health Park is Health Centre providing a wide range of services under one roof including two doctors practices, dentist, chiropodist, health education and a chemist. Built in collaboration with the Users, Architects, Artists Construction team and Staff. Rob Olins masterplanned the “vision” of the building and engaged a range of practices to develop and design the art interventions, landscape design, way finding systems and flexible environments that are now in the new Building. The designs and the location of the artworks at Truro Health Park were a result of a comprehensive community consultation project commencing in 2006. The feedback gained at these workshops informed the artworks resulting in the wide range of art interventions that relate to the building, its site, its function and to each other, helping the whole site to have an integrated and welcoming atmosphere.
Truro Health Park is two buildings linked by a bridge, under which the roots from 3 Monterey Pine trees run. The courtyard shown in the image was created between the two buildings giving a semi accessable landscape. The design is based on the trees and the way they informed the health parks architecture. Lines of Paddle Stones are used to define the path of the pines roots extending from the trunks. Cutting across this runs a gracefully curved path with a prominent steel edge that’s shows a way through and around the pines. Although not strictly for public access, the path provides a reason or story to the space, a ‘walk for the mind’ for those looking out into it.
Truro Health Park has a prominent site in a conservation area near Truro Town Centre. Consequently the building and landscaping are subject to rigorous planning controls ranging from the type of planting to the height, style and material of the building.
